Fiat 500s are most at home in congested urban streets, but a small flock of the stylish city cars has been spotted making a break for freedom, crashing through seas off the coast of Miami Beach.
Don’t adjust your eyeballs… these images are, as far as we can tell, very real. The Fiat 500s were being driven, or rather sailed, as part of a publicity stunt to coincide with a new Fiat advertising campaign. The clip, which you can watch on YouTube, depicts the cars ‘swimming’ from Italy to the United States with the slogan “The next wave of Italians has come to America – and they’ve come to party.”
The cars, which were followed by Fiat event staff on jetskis and in boats, dazzled onlookers, many of whom stopped their sunbathing to grab photos and videos of the stunt.
From a distance, the orange and white cars look very much as if they’re being driven under their own power. Fiat has yet to explain the exact nature of the modifications, but a closer look suggests the water-borne 500s are cleverly converted jet skis concealed by Fiat 500 and 500c body panels.
The Fiat 500 is available to buy in the UK now from £9,456. Modding them to swim will probably add a substantial amount to that price.
